What are Mix and Match codes and why would you want to use them?
Mix and Match codes are numerical codes that you apply to items that links them together in such a way that the system allows similar items to apply towards a package price.
An example of this would be a 2 for deal with Pepsi 20oz products. Let's say you wanted to give a discount to a customer when he bought 2 20oz Pepsi products. The first 20 oz Pepsi would ring up at $1.79, but the second one would get a discount and the total price would be 2 for $3.00. In this example the package price is $3.00 when you buy 2.
But what if the customer buys a 20 oz Pepsi and a 20 oz Mountain Dew?
This is where you need a "Mix and Match" code. You punch in the mix and match code on the Pepsi, and the Mountain Dew 20 oz and then both items would count towards the package price of $3.00.
The process for setting up a mix and match code is that you first program the mix and match code in the mix and match table found in the auxiliary drop down menu in SMS Pro. Next you would go to each of the items and program the mix and match code number onto them. You would also program the entire Price table to be identical on both items. So both items would need to be programmed for 1.79$ for 1 and $3.00 for 2. The mix and match code links the two items together.
Can I just do it by price point and mix different types of products together?
Yes and no.
Technically speaking yes, you absolutely can mix different products together. You could create a bunch of stock mix and match codes for common values like 2 for $5.00, 3 for $5.00, etc., and then just dump all the items that fit into these price points into these mix and match numbers. Technically this would absolutely work. The problem with it is that you'd be unnecessarily be giving discounts to customers that maybe shouldn't be getting a discount. If a customer walks in and buys a 20oz Pepsi and a bag of Frito Lay chips, do you want those items to combine together to give it to him for $3.00? Probably not. What you probably want is to create a 2 for $3.00 Pepsi mix and match code, AND a 2 for $3.00 Frito Lay mix and match code. If the customer buys two bags of chips he'll get the discount, if he buys to bottles of Pepsi he'll get the discount but he won't get the discount if he buys 1 Pepsi, and 1 bag of chips.
Technically speaking, the system can do either but generally speaking you'll want to avoid combining different product types when using Mix and Match codes.
